News from the Backyard: May 2018

Last Month in the Backyards: In April, we continued to distribute food and Bible study materials to our families. Backyard Clubs got started in Huntingdon, Mount Union, and Altoona. We deepened our presence at the doors in Homewood North (Pittsburgh) and Oakhurst Extension (Johnstown). And at our first Backyard Club at Fairview Hills (Altoona) 11 of the 20 children present were Muslim. What a blessing to have the opportunity to teach Muslim kids about Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world.

Coming Up in the Backyards: In May, Backyard Clubs will begin in Lewistown, Johnstown, and Pittsburgh. We are also partnering with churches in Johnstown to develop face to face Bible studies at Oakhurst and Coopersdale. And this summer we are expanding to Portage and considering expansion to Nanty Glo, Blairsville, and Wilkinsburg (Pittsburgh). God is really on the move in the neighborhoods.

Our Featured BYC Kid this month is a group of precious Muslim children in Altoona. These kids are from Egypt, Sudan, and other countries and are mostly the children of refugees. As you can imagine, being a Muslim refugee in America in 2018 is tough. We are very blessed to have developed strong relationships within this community. Please pray for the needs of these families as they adjust to life in a new country and for continued opportunities to share the Gospel with them.

Stories from the Backyard: BYM is now engaged with more than 1000 families. Behind every door there is a story. David was just diagnosed with cancer and told he has 6-9 months to live. Robert was homeless and is thankful for his apartment. Michelle is waiting to find out if her cancer is back. A grandma is being evicted from her apartment because she allowed her homeless son to stay with her. Angie’s dog was run over by a car. Dezaray is blessed that many times the food we brought was all they had for dinner. Ray had surgery and says he opens his door for us because he knows we really care about him. Julia has cancer. A single mom attempted suicide. Brandon lost a loved one. Samantha’s cancer may be back. Lauren has MS. Barb has been sick for 11 years. “Those in need will not always be forgotten.” Psalm 9:18

Current Ministry Needs: BYM has a constant need for cans of soup, Bible activity and coloring books, toothbrushes, and toothpaste. We need more food providers as we lost a major Johnstown provider this month. We also need volunteers for our kid’s programs. Items can be dropped off in Belleville at Yoder’s Tees, in Altoona at 418 26th Avenue, or at any of our BYC programs.

Mobile Soup Kitchen News/Benevolence/Home Bible Studies: BYM distributes more than 3000 food items per month to needy families. BYM also helps needy families with food and housing emergencies. More than 600 adults now participate in our Home Bible Study available in English and Spanish.

BYM Support: You can sponsor a BYC kid for $20.00 a month (or $240.00 a year). Pledges are due the fifteenth of each month. To get started simply send a check made payable to Backyard Ministries to the address below. BYM currently has 50 partnering churches. Please contact us if your church would like to partner with BYM or if you would like us to present the ministry in your church.

Camp Shoshanah

I praise the Lord for the honor of teaching a Jewish evangelism seminar to a group of 80+ students at Camp Shoshanah in Keeseville, NY from July 8th - 22nd. The camp is run by Ariel Ministries (another Jewish mission like ours). It was one of the highlights of my career in Jewish missions. Many of the students said that the information they received will be very beneficial to them in their future endeavors to share the Gospel with God's Chosen People. To think that I could have an impact on improving another believer's ability to witness to Jewish people, or possibly even lead them to the Lord, is quite overwhelming to say the least. "My cup runneth over" with joy.

2 Timothy 2:2 And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.
Praise the Lord that on Saturday July 8th (during the weekend between the first and second week of classes at camp) I was part of a group of 21 that took the ferry across Lake Champlain into Burlington, VT to do some street evangelism in a park area with many vendors and many people. We gave out over 1,000 tracts, had meaningful opportunities to share Jesus, and 2 people came to believe in Jesus. Praise the Lord!
Praise the Lord also that our staff back in Philadelphia continued right on with our weekly Friday night outreach services while I was away. As a matter of fact, I was teaching on Friday nights at the exact same time our mission staff was ministering to the Jewish people at our services back home.

Yours for the message of Israel's Messiah,
Thomas Huckel, Director

Every year the kids have the opportunity of going to Camp Calvary, located in Reading PA. The trip is filled with adventures, games and teachings from the word of God that makes a permanent stamp in their lives. This year our trip was a blast and we had many kids making decisions for Christ. We'll let the pictures tell you more!
